McDonald Grain was began in 1921 by John J McDonald as a coal firm in Rosedale Kansas, he later sold animal feeds, and then after the depression became a complete line Feed Store. Primarily the dairy feeds as their main focus. By 1940 his son took over as the operator of the store due to his father's interest in local politics, he was the mayor of Kansas City, Kansas for one term. His son John & his wife Maxine operated the store for the next 41 years. During their tenure they manufactured dog foods and cleaned and salvage grain from the local rail yards.

The company changed their focus to meeting the needs of local dairies and their feed requirements, that lead to being a full time feed dealer in the 40's and 50's. At that time they developed a salvage grain business from all the grain spilled by railroad companies on the tracks. Cleaning the grain and then reselling it to the local gain companies.
