He credit union began business on January 4, 1937 as Hawaii Rapid Transit Federal Credit Union, HRTFCU. Other credit unions which opened just prior to HRTFCU were Hawaiian Electric Company FCU, Hawaiian Telephone Company FCU and Honolulu Gas Company FCU. The needs to open a credit union were at a minimum of 50 members who had a common bond, which in this case was Hawaii Rapid Transit (HRT) employee. Eventually, other people were hired as the credit union grew.
