On the night of November 7, 2009, a tiny tricolored beagle puppy captivated my heart and allowed me another chance to love a dog, the same breed as our beloved Lizzy, whom we lost in September. I thought to wait until spring to discuss even getting another dog but found life without dog rather sad. The French have an expression - Une maison sans animaux est triste. This time the awesome responsibility of choosing a beagle puppy fell to me. In the Oregonian, we found beagle puppies for sale in Dallas, Oregon.

read moreAs 2020 draws to an end, I would like to wish you all good health and happiness in 2021. One would think next year might be better. I really miss connecting with my students in person, but am fortunate to continue teaching French online via Zoom. If you would like to do online French lessons, please let me know. Tuition remains at $50 per hour and can be shared among three students. Winter Book Club begins January 6 with the reading of Minute, Papillon by Aurelie Valognes. Described as an optimistic and humorous novel, it feels like just the right book to help us get through the winter.

Giselle's twin sister, Beth, has lived in Saudi Arabia with her Saudi husband and five children over 18 years. This is our first trip to visit Beth and her home. Beth often comes to France and the U.S. This was our chance to see how Beth lives and visit a part of the world most people are not permitted to go. Saudi Arabia grants visas only to immediate family members, government officials and certain pilgrimage groups to Mecca and Medina.
