Kids and adults throughout Austin have been studying at Shirley McPhail School of Dance since 1970, when Shirley Wood McPhail began her dance studio, most likely never dreaming the impact it would have on Austin over the years. Literally tens of 1000's of students have crossed the doors of SMSD, and an unbelievable number have returned, to dance again themselves and/or to bring their kids and even their grandchildren!

read moreMy 5 year old daughter started at SMSD in the Twinkle Tots program at age 3 and hasn't stopped twirling! The teachers we've had through classes and camps are all wonderful. We haven't had a bad one yet, and the older girls in the Troupe are so sweet and loving to the littles. All children are well taken care of while there, and I trust SMSD and their staff with all my heart. Thank you Ms. Edwina, Ms. Lauris, Ms. Kristin, Ms. Whitney, Ms. Kayla, Ms. Teresa and everyone for being so encouraging and welcoming to our entire family.

For five decades, we have educated thousands of dancers in coordination, poise, grace, and mental and physical growth. Operating a family friendly, multi-generational studio, SMSD continues the philosophy and dance standards of founder Shirley McPhail through the directorship of her daughter, Edwina McPhail Worley. Our three main goals consist of creating an enjoyable and fun dance atmosphere, nurturing and safe educational environment, and helping students develop proper dance techniques.
