His paintings reflect his fondness of the South and Southwest, with subjects varying from old homesteads deep in the middle of Texas to old churches and pueblos in New Mexico, to the majestic mountains and streams of Colorado. His interest in art was sparked in 1974 when his son started lessons in oil painting. The younger Beck developed his talent in a university setting and the older by lessons with area artists while painting in his home studio.
