The period of Japanese history between the eighth and sixteenth centuries had civil war and many martial arts systems were practiced and perfected on the battlefield. This training was used to conquer armored and armed opponents using close fighting. As many as they were, most have their roots in Ju Jitsu, including most modern-day martial arts. For instance, many styles of Karate, as well as Judo (a throwing sport) and Aikido (known mostly as a spiritual, rather than combative art) are all fragments of Ju Jitsu.
