Dairy Council of California's story starts in 1919 when two well known dairy industry leaders, Sam Greene and Chester Earl Gray were on San Francisco Bay ferryboat commuter trips. They had been reading about discoveries in the area of nutrition, in particular two articles published in Hoards Dairyman about the discovery of vitamin A by Dr. E. V. McCollum from the University of Wisconsin. McCollum characterized vitamin A as a vital life substance in dairy fat. , cities around the country were experimenting with school feeding programs in the early 1900s.
