St. James Baptist Church organized from the idea of Sisters Mary Ann Dandridge, Julia Brown and Eliza Green who met weekly to do their laundry at a spring in the old neighborhood of Gordontown. Constantly they discussed the community's need of a place for entertainment, worship, and education. Their discussions led to the Gordonville Club # 1 and the purchase of an acre of land upon which a building was erected. Initially the building was used for prayer services, club meetings, Sunday School and Day School, but after a year, five members of the club decided to organize a church.
