Diabetic Retinopathy
read moreYour body can be affected by diabetes in many ways. It can affect your vision by causing cataracts, glaucoma and damage to the blood vessels in your eyes. Between 40 to 45 percent of Americans diagnosed with diabetes have some degree of diabetic retinopathy. People with untreated diabetes are said to be 25 times more at risk for blindness. The longer you have diabetes, the greater the risk of developing diabetic retinopathy. An early stage of diabetic retinopathy is background diabetic retinopathy.
Macular Degeneration
read moreMacular degeneration is a breakdown of the macula in an eye. The macula is a small area in the back of the eye that allows a person to see fine detail. The breakdown of the macula causes decreased central vision, which can affect our distance and near vision. This disease is more common as people get older due to aging of the eye. Two types of the disease exist - dry (atrophic) and wet (exudative). The Dry subtype is the most common, and is caused by the aging and thinning of the macula. Vision loss is primarily gradual.
Dry Eyes
read moreDry eye syndrome is a common condition in which there is a deficiency in the quality and/or quantity of tears produced by the eyes. Tears perform an important function for the eye in keeping it clean, lubricated, providing nutrition and establishing a smooth surface through which the eye refracts light. Typical symptoms of dry eye include dry or gritty sensation, scratchiness, itching, burning, pain, eyelid heaviness, intermittent blurred vision and intermittent tearing. Symptoms are usually worse later in the day, with prolonged use of the eyes and in conditions of heat, wind and low humidity.
